MUN Tips & Tricks

When it comes to MUN conferences, there’s something everyone wants to improve, either it’s about how to make appropriate research or just about how to resonate with the other delegates. This is why it’s beneficial for us to always search for new methods to better our MUN skills to evolve as delegates. Whatever the reason, I think you will find this article useful and enjoyable.

I started my MUN journey about a year ago. From that moment, I knew this was going to be a life-changing experience. For those who are beginners with this type of conference, I guarantee you’re gonna love it, and for those who have gained experience over time, I think we are on the same page. In this article, I want to present to you some tips & tricks that helped me a lot during all these amazing conferences.

1. Deep research is good research

Nothing is too much when it comes to make research on a topic. The role of this research is to help a delegate better understand what is the topic about, what is their country’s position regarding the topic, and so on. The first research a delegate has to do is when they are writing a position paper, an academic document that shows a country’s stance on a fundamental problem. Then it is important to make a deep research about the relations with the other countries in order to ally with them in finding solutions for that problem. Another advantageous tip will be searching for issues, national and international conflicts in other countries that are in the committee, for making a point of information when another delegate is presenting a speech.

2. Critical and analytical thinking

Here is important to remember that every delegate needs to make all the research in accordance with the status of their country regarding a specific topic and the speech as well, without the intervention of their personal opinion (that can explain why at these conferences the delegates have to refer to themselves at the third form). Critical thinking skills are often highlighted in committee work when the delegates will have to come up with ingenious ideas to combat different situations and issues.

3. Body language says a lot

The importance of body language is huge, especially when a delegate tries to make a point in their speech and wants to gather as many allies as possible. The committee will look and pay attention to a confident, determined person who knows exactly what they are fighting for and what they want to solve. When we have a conversation or give a speech in front of people, it’s good to know that the movements, eyes contact, gesture, stance, all these things help the public to better understand our intentions, which is why it is useful to know how to use these gestures for making your message clear. For those who are shyer of their kind about things related to public speaking or making eye contact, trust me, after going through several events and conferences like this, it will become a habit, just have the courage and try.

4. Experience is the key

No matter how good you are at debating, one of the best tips that I can recommend is that trying as many conferences as possible will improve a lot not only your MUN skills but also the competency you need in life. Gaining experience will help you to figure out what type of delegate you are and the things that can be improved. Every debating competition helps with insecurities such as public speaking, critical thinking, working under pressure, and listening to others’ opinions, actions that won’t be a difficulty future dates. With that being said, have the courage and desire to attend as many conferences as you can, you won’t realize how much this will change you as a person.

5. Don’t forget to have fun

I think this one is the best (and my favorite one). You can’t enjoy yourself and the committee if you don’t have fun. MUN conferences are not just about showing that a delegate or a country is better than another one, is about collaborating in finding optimal solution and meeting new people, getting in touch with new perceptions and ideas that might surprise you. Stay open-minded and I promise, you will have some pretty amazing experiences.

Now that I’ve presented to you some tips & tricks that boost my MUN experiences, I hope I helped you understand a little bit about these debates and make you curious to participate in as many conferences as possible. Make sure you stay tuned for our new articles because it’s going to approach some impressive topics! And happy holidays to all of you!
